Book Description

A?short, up-to-date text on blood groups, for people working or training in the field of blood transfusion, transplantation, or human genetics, but who are not specialising in the field of blood groups and, therefore, do not require the much more comprehensive textbook, Human Blood Groups. The?third edition of Essential Guide to Blood Groups will be a pocket-sized book of about 110 pages, containing four colour text together with schematic figures and tables. The book will comprise an introduction to blood groups, followed by chapters on techniques, information on various blood groups, antibodies, quality assurance in immunohaematology, and it concludes with chapters on troubleshooting in the laboratory, and FAQs. It also covers the serology, inheritance, biochemistry and molecular genetics of the most important blood group systems. The main aim of the blood transfusion laboratory is to promote safe blood transfusion. The avoidance of errors, from sample receipt and laboratory testing through to the release of blood for transfusion, is of paramount importance. Knowledge of immunohaematology theory and its application to blood transfusion together with the principles of good laboratory practice are essential.A basic knowledge of blood groups is important in the fields of transfusion and transplantation medicine and science. Blood transfusion is generally extremely safe, nevertheless there are serious hazards associated with the administration of blood products. One of the commonest errors reported is the transfusion of blood intended for another patient. The main reasons for this error are labelling and the process of ordering, cross-matching and the giving of blood. A small practical guide covering the essential information about the important blood group systems is therefore a great help in addressing these particular issues. The previous edition of Essential Guide was published in 2006. Advances are constantly being made in the field of human blood groups and related technologies (e.g. gene analysis), in particular in the development of high throughput techniques. Updated sections include: 3 new blood group systems: FORS, JR, and LAN; 11?new antigens to Rh, Kell, Diego, P1PK, Lutheran, Dombrock, Gerbich, and Cromer systems; More on ABO incompatible transplantation; More on ABO association with disease; New variants of D and further recommendations of transfusion policy; Modelling of Rh proteins; Information on routine fetal D screening; Next generation sequencing and its potential in blood grouping; A new generation of gel test; New information on automation in blood grouping; and New FAQs.
