Book Review and Awards
"I'd highly recommend this humorous romp to children (and adults) of all ages. This story has truthful insights as to how children may see themselves in a world of both peers and adults whom they often seem to feel are against them. The young man, Pip, finds himself being sent off to summer camp against his wishes, and he gets himself into one "misadventure" after another. He does finally end up learning some subtle, yet real life lessons, and he even ends up liking camp while forming new friendships. I think that this book truly does help chidren to feel less alone in this sometimes unfair world, while they can vicariously join in Pip's antics as they laugh and nod their heads to all that happens to him. I read this to the children in my class, and while they showed a lot of empathy for Pip, they also howled with laughter over the many predicaments and funny antics that he seemed unable to avoid. Children need this type of story to better help them deal with some of their own daily choices. I also feel that it was a nice touch having questions at the end of this book. The questions asked by the author helped children to reflect on what they might have done differently, or whether they would have had the same problems as Pip. This book even helps us adults to think twice about how we handle children, and how we could perhaps be a bit kinder and more gentle with better results!" - Sara Berg
